Preview of "The Illustrator's Guide to Oz"

I have been considering a book on character designs for artists who want to work on Oz books. I want to be able to as many characters as I can. I always thought it would be interesting to have one book that I could reference for a characters look without having to pull out different books all the time (to be honest, I haven't needed to do that in a long time, but I know that some artists might still have too.).

Nice thought.
Not everyone would draw the same way, but that could still be handy for anybody!

Good idea.

Dude, DO IT! That's an awesome idea. I would suggest, however, that you get some other artists' examples aside from your own. If nothing else, some good (and, very importantly, public domain) examples of the characters from Denslow and Neill could show where you're coming from. But I suspect there are a few other Oz artists out there who might be persuaded to provide a few examples as well. I'm not even an artist, and I'd buy this book!

Eric, you must have been reading my mind. I was thinking about doing those very same things.

I like this concept!

I also like the basic concept. I agree that it would probably be nice for artists to have reference material collected in one place so that they don't have to constantly be digging through books or doing google searches for relevant illustrations. I admit I nearly pooh-poohed this idea, however, because, as SAM A M said, not everybody draws like you. I like your style and the way you draw the characters seems pretty faithful to the original illustrations, but I couldn't help questioning why your specific depictions should be regarded as the template for other artists. However, knowing that the intention would be to provide the work of other artists as well makes it something I could more easily get behind.

It's not going to be about my style, but rather getting the basic look of the character. I try to keep the look of the characters as faithful to how Denslow, Neill, and others first did them. I think that I am one of the few artists who know Oz so well that I could do something like this.

I love the idea, and think it could be incorporated into your art book! :)
